Your Rankings Are Fine, But Your Clicks Aren't - Here's What To Do About It

If you've checked Google Search Console this year and found your rankings holding steady while your clicks quietly fall, that's not a glitch, and it's not necessarily you slipping. Google is answering more questions directly on the results page, and sending fewer people through to click.

The numbers are pretty stark. On queries where an AI Overview shows up, organic click-through rate has dropped 61%, from around 1.76% down to 0.61%. Paid CTR on those same queries fell even further, down 68%. It's not contained to AI Overview queries either, even searches without an AI Overview present saw organic CTR fall 41% over the same period, as user behaviour shifts generally toward scanning rather than clicking.

Across every vertical, organic click share is down. Notice what isn't moving in any of this: rankings. Google isn't demoting you - it's withholding the click.

WHICH PAGES ARE GETTING HIT HARDEST

Informational and comparison content is taking the worst of it: "best X for Y" roundups, "how to choose" guides, sizing and care pages, product comparison content. If you've built out a content library aimed at capturing that kind of search intent, it's losing the click even where it still ranks well, because that's precisely the content Google can now answer directly without sending anyone anywhere.

Independent content sites and D2C brands are being hit hardest here, because a lot of what used to justify a click, a buying guide, a comparison, a how-to, is now something Google can generate itself from everyone else's existing content, including yours.

Falling Clicks

THIS IS A CLICK DISTRIBUTION, NOT A RANKING COLLAPSE - BUT ONLY IF YOU ADAPT TO IT

The upside is that the traffic that does make it through an AI Overview click tends to convert better than average organic traffic, because it's arrived past the research stage. However, it means the old strategy of publishing broad informational content for click volume doesn't work the way it used to.

The actions we're recommending now:

  • Restructure key content so the direct answer sits in the first 40 to 60 words, giving Google something clean to cite.

  • Add proper structured data (FAQ Page, Product and How-To formats) on the pages most exposed to this shift.

  • Audit your AI visibility specifically, not just rank tracking. Ranking well and being cited are two different things now.

  • Lean harder into Shopping and Search ads to capture the purchase-intent traffic that organic used to carry further down the funnel.

  • Optimise all areas of your product feed.

A SHIFT IN THE METRICS THAT MATTER

If your reporting still leads with sessions, it's measuring the wrong thing. The more useful question is what's converting, and where the traffic that does convert is actually coming from. A shrinking number of clicks converting at a higher rate can be a perfectly healthy outcome, if the rest of your funnel knows how to catch it.

If organic was carrying more of your funnel than you'd like to admit, this is the year that stops being sustainable on rankings alone. It's worth knowing exactly how much of your acquisition still depends on the click Google is no longer guaranteeing, before your Q4 numbers decide it for you.

If you want to see how exposed your funnel really is, and where your paid social / PPC should be picking up the slack, book an audit and we'll walk you through it.
